Simon Sinek Says “People Don’t Buy What You Do – They Buy Why You Do It”

“People Don’t Buy What You Do, They Buy Why You Do It.”

This very powerful statement is presented by Simon Sinek, author of the 2009 book titled ‘Start With Your Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action.’ Sinek’s book is based on the premise that to be successful and to be a leader, in life and in business, you have to find your passion, dream, and purpose. Your WHY.

Sinek says that when you uncover you WHY – your motivation to do what you do in life – you will naturally attract those who share this same belief and value. When you start from your WHY, you will create an energy so magnetic and so powerful that good things can’t help but come to find you, and come to fruition.

I was recently able to watch Sinek’s TED video, which I’ve included here for you to watch if you haven’t already. In Sinek’s illuminating TED talk, he delves into how most companies and individuals approach business and life starting with the how’s and what’s, and contrasts that with the way that the visionary 10 percent look at the world.


Sinek says that the small group of individuals and business that start from the inside out, asking themselves WHY they are motivated to do what they do, are the pioneers and the game changers; the leaders who will ultimately bring us to bigger and better things for ourselves and those around us.

While the majority of companies and people tell us what they sell, what services they provide, how they can help us, and what they can do for us, the businesses and individuals who find the most success are the ones that show us what they envision for us and for our future. They gently persuade us to take their hand and find success together, as they talk to us about the ways they believe our lives will change for the better should we choose to come on board them.

Sinek references Apple as one of the rare and powerful leading-edge businesses that successfully pull people into their world of ‘computer-company-selling-all-sorts-of-things-to-make-people-happy-and-doing-it-quite-well.”

Sinek goes on to compare Apple’s successful approach in building excitement and passion around its life-transforming products with TIVO, a company who had a wonderfully innovative product, yet failed to show consumers why they would be better off having the ability to easily schedule their lives around recording, rewinding, and pausing live television.

In the Network Marketing and home-based business world, there is often a conversation around the WHY – Why are you doing what you do?

If you are doing what you to only to make money and become rich, chances are the people who are motivated by passion, world transformation, and a calling to make things better for everyone will be those who enjoy the most personal and financial freedom.

Throughout the history of the world, the individuals who have dreamed big dreams, and worked off a driving force that said, “This is WHY I am here in the world – This is what I am here to do,” are the ones who have made a name for themselves as great leaders and people who make great things happen.

So, let me ask you. What is your WHY? What motivates and drives you? What is your passion? What unique calling do you have that will cause people to move mountains to associate with you?

Whatever it is, this is what you should be doing in your business, whether you are taking the Network Marketing approach or building your own company.

Move forward in your business with the intention of sharing your WHY – Your vision for the masses, with the masses. And, believe me, you will find the people who are eager to join you on your path to greatness.

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to discover you own personal WHY:

  • What am I most passionate about?
  • What drives me or calls to me, and is it a noble calling?
  • What does success look like to me?
  • What would I do if I could do it for free, and live an amazing life?
  • How can I turn my passion into a business – an income generating opportunity?
  • How can I make a difference to someone else?
  • What small steps can I take now to begin making that difference?
  • How will the differences that I make create great things in life for my family and myself too?
  • What causes are important to me – and do they need my help?
  • Is there a real and honest need for what I do and what I have to offer?

Take some time to search for your WHY, and THEN put into place the how’s and what’s. Success and leadership must start from within.
